The five limbs
- Tithi
- The lunar day — how far the Moon has pulled ahead of the Sun, in 12-degree steps. It sets the fortnight (paksha) and most festival dates.
- Vara
- The weekday, each ruled by a planet — Sunday by the Sun, Monday by the Moon, and so on. It runs from sunrise, not midnight.
- Nakshatra
- The lunar mansion the Moon occupies today, one of 27. This is the limb most used for muhurat and for personal timing.
- Yoga
- A named combination derived from the Sun and Moon added together — 27 of them, describing the general quality of the day.
- Karana
- Half a tithi. There are eleven, and they refine the tithi for finer timing decisions.

What is the panchang?
The panchang is the Vedic almanac for a given day, built from five limbs (panch = five, anga = limb): tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Together they describe the position of the Sun and Moon for that day, which is what traditional timing decisions are based on.
Why does the panchang change by location?
The vara (weekday) runs sunrise to sunrise rather than midnight to midnight, and sunrise depends on where you are. Two cities can therefore be on different tithis at the same moment. Ours is calculated for New Delhi by default.
What is a tithi?
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month, 15 in the waxing fortnight (Shukla paksha) and 15 in the waning one (Krishna paksha). Because the Moon does not move at a constant speed, a tithi is not exactly 24 hours.
How is this calculated?
From the same sidereal engine as our charts — Lahiri ayanamsa, astronomical-grade planetary positions. Tithi and karana come from the Sun–Moon elongation, yoga from their combined sidereal longitude, and nakshatra from the Moon alone. You can check any of it against a printed panchang.
Is the panchang the same as a horoscope?
