What does a planet in a house mean in Vedic astrology?

A house is an area of life — body, wealth, siblings, home, children, and so on — and the planet sitting in it colours that area with its own nature. Saturn in the 7th delays and steadies marriage; Venus in the 7th sweetens it. The house says what, the planet says how.

Are houses counted from the ascendant or the Moon?

Primarily from the ascendant (lagna), which is the sign rising at your birth. Many astrologers also read the chart a second time from the Moon sign as a cross-check. These pages count from the ascendant, and each one includes a table showing how the placement changes for all twelve.

Why does the same placement read differently for different ascendants?

Because the house is a different sign for each ascendant. The 7th house is Libra for an Aries ascendant, where Saturn is exalted, and Aries for a Libra ascendant, where Saturn falls. On top of that, the houses a planet rules change with the ascendant, which decides whether it is a functional benefic, a yogakaraka or a maraka.

What is a yogakaraka?

A planet that rules both a kendra (4th, 7th or 10th) and a trikona (5th or 9th) from your ascendant. That combination makes it powerfully positive for that chart regardless of its natural nature — Mars for Cancer and Leo ascendants, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn for Taurus and Libra.
