Bhadra Yoga forms when Mercury is in Gemini or Virgo — its own signs, Virgo also being its exaltation — and that sign is a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lagna. It is the Mercury member of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas and is possible only for the four dual-sign ascendants.

What Bhadra Yoga is associated with
Bhadra is the Mercury type of the Mahapurusha yogas, so its descriptions centre on intellect. Texts associate it with a fine memory, eloquence, skill in reasoning and calculation, and a youthful, well-proportioned appearance. It is classically linked with learning, writing, trade, accounting, law and communication, and with a person whose cleverness is put to practical use. The native is described as courteous and good company, with a reputation built on competence. As with the other four, the kendra involved colours where this shows most.

Mercury travels close to the Sun, so it is often combust, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and other texts say a Mahapurusha planet joined by the Sun or the Moon, or combust, gives a reduced result. Because Gemini and Virgo can only be kendras for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants, the yoga is confined to those four lagnas. Some writers also count kendras from the Moon. Classical texts say yes — a Mahapurusha planet that is combust or joined by the Sun gives a smaller result. Mercury is combust in many charts, so check its distance from the Sun. Our chart lists the yoga either way.
Which ascendants can have Bhadra yoga?
Only Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Those are the only lagnas for which Gemini or Virgo falls in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, so no other ascendant can form it.
How do I know if I have Bhadra yoga?
