Vipareeta Raja Yoga

Also written Viparita Raja Yoga, Vipreet Raj Yoga, Viparit Rajyoga, Vipareet Raja Yoga

Vipareeta Raja Yoga forms when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house is placed in a different one of those three houses — the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th, or the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th. These are the dusthanas, the houses of difficulty.

What Vipareeta Raja Yoga is associated with

The idea is that one difficulty undoes another: a lord of hardship placed in another house of hardship spends its harm there instead of on the rest of the chart. Texts associate the yoga with success that arrives through adversity — a rival's fall, an unexpected inheritance, recovery after a crisis, or gains in fields others avoid. It is classically described as producing results suddenly and through reversals rather than steady growth. Later texts name three variants: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th and Vimala for the 12th.

What weakens it, and what this site checks

Fuller treatments say the yoga works best when the dusthana lord is otherwise weak and unconnected with the lagna lord or other good houses, and some authors require the lagna lord to be strong for the benefit to reach the native. Many also include a dusthana lord in its own dusthana. Our engine is narrower: it lists the yoga only when the lord sits in a different dusthana, so a 6th lord in the 6th does not qualify. It does not check the lord's dignity, conjunctions, aspects or the lagna lord, and it reports the first lord that qualifies.

FAQ

Vipareeta Raja Yoga — common questions

Is Vipareeta Raja yoga good?

It is classically treated as favourable, but in an unusual way: gains are described as coming through other people's losses, crises or reversals rather than through steady effort. Texts present it as resilience more than easy fortune.

Does the 8th lord in the 8th house count?

Not in our check. Many astrologers count a dusthana lord in its own house as a form of the yoga, but our engine lists it only when the lord sits in a different one of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.

How do I know if I have Vipareeta Raja yoga?

Find which planets rule your 6th, 8th and 12th houses and see whether any of them sits in another of those three houses. The free kundli at /free-kundli shows house lords and placements and lists the yoga if formed.
