Gaja Kesari Yoga

Also written Gajakesari Yoga, Gaj Kesari Yoga, Gajakesari Yog, Gaja Kesari Yog

Gaja Kesari Yoga forms when Jupiter sits in a kendra counted from the Moon — the same sign as the Moon, or the 4th, 7th or 10th sign from it. That is the whole test we apply. Because four of the twelve signs qualify, roughly one chart in three has it, which is why it is the yoga people most often find in their own kundali.

What Gaja Kesari Yoga is associated with

The name pairs two images of strength: the elephant for steadiness and the lion for boldness. Texts describe a person who is respected in their circle, speaks well, is helpful to others and keeps a good name over a long period. Jupiter brings judgement and goodwill, and the Moon carries the mind, so the combination is read as sound judgement supporting an even temperament. It is classically associated with reputation and comfort rather than sudden wealth, and its effects are usually described as most visible in the periods of Jupiter and the Moon.

What weakens it, and what this site checks

Fuller treatments do not give the yoga full weight in every chart that meets the basic rule. Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn, combust near the Sun, or in an enemy sign is described as giving a much smaller result, and some texts want Jupiter aspected by or joined with benefics, or a reasonably bright Moon. A few authors also read Jupiter in a kendra from the lagna. Our engine checks one thing only: Jupiter's sign in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon's sign. It does not look at Jupiter's dignity, combustion, aspects, the Moon's phase, or the position from the lagna.

FAQ

Gaja Kesari Yoga — common questions

Is Gaja Kesari yoga rare?

No. Jupiter only has to be in one of four signs counted from the Moon, so about a third of all charts have it. That is why astrologers judge its strength — Jupiter's sign, combustion, aspects — rather than treating its mere presence as remarkable.

Does Gaja Kesari yoga work if Jupiter is debilitated?

Classical texts describe it as much weaker when Jupiter is in Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, unless that debility is itself cancelled. Our chart still lists the yoga in that case, because the rule we apply looks only at position from the Moon, so read it alongside Jupiter's dignity.

How do I know if I have Gaja Kesari yoga?

Find the Moon's sign in your chart and count to Jupiter's sign, starting from the Moon as one. If the count is 1, 4, 7 or 10, the yoga is present. The free kundli at /free-kundli does this count for you and lists every yoga it finds.
