Hamsa Yoga

Also written Hansa Yoga, Hamsa Yog, Hans Yoga, Hamsa Mahapurusha Yoga

Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in Sagittarius or Pisces, its own signs, or Cancer, its exaltation, and that sign is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lagna. It is the Jupiter member of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, and the one most closely tied to learning and counsel.

What Hamsa Yoga is associated with

The swan in Indian imagery separates milk from water, and Hamsa Yoga is read as discernment: the Jupiter type of Mahapurusha is described as righteous, learned, respected by good people and drawn to teaching, law, counsel or religious life. Texts mention a pleasant appearance, a contented nature and the regard of those in authority. It is classically associated with wisdom and good conduct more than with ambition. Jupiter in the 1st or 10th is usually read as the most visible form, and in the 4th as inner contentment and a settled home.

What weakens it, and what this site checks

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and later texts weaken a Mahapurusha yoga when the planet is combust or joined by the Sun or Moon, and Jupiter as a kendra lord can carry the so-called kendradhipati dosha for some ascendants, which fuller readings take into account. Some authors also count from the Moon. Our engine checks two conditions: Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer, and that sign in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the lagna. It does not check combustion, conjunctions, degree, functional nature for the lagna, or kendras from the Moon.

FAQ

Hamsa Yoga — common questions

Is Hamsa yoga the same as Gaja Kesari yoga?

No. Gaja Kesari counts Jupiter's position from the Moon and ignores its sign. Hamsa counts from the lagna and needs Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer. A chart can have both, one, or neither.

Which ascendants can have Hamsa yoga?

Sagittarius and Pisces fall in kendras for the four dual-sign ascendants, and Cancer for Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. So eight ascendants can form it; Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius cannot.

How do I know if I have Hamsa yoga?

Check whether Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer and whether that sign is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. The free kundli at /free-kundli checks both conditions from your birth time and place.
